Open-source

Koodariverstas is a big supporter of open source software. We believe that open source is the future of software development in both public and private sectors. Open source lets developers control the direction of the product and the consumer can directly see what the product does and what it doesn’t. Open source software is also secure by it’s very design, everyone can see the inner workings of the software and check for vulnerabilities.

The European Union is also pushing for more open source software as a solutions to replace “traditional” closed source solutions. This approach makes it easier for everyone to get into software development and makes it easier to get involved as a novice.

Our relationship with open-source

Our operating methods are based on the practices of open-source projects. We utilize GitHub in all projects carried out by students. Almost all the code produced at Koodariverstas is visible and modifiable by everyone.

The Wiki platform managed by Koodariverstas is open-source and freely accessible on GitHub. Any person with a GitHub account can submit their own modifications for review and implementation.

We prefer Open-Source software in our other activities as Well. For project management, we use Taiga. Taiga is a completely open-source project management tool that allows for real-time monitoring of student projects. Taiga includes several different agile development tools and its use is entirely free.

We utilize Quarto for wiki platform development. Quarto is a completely open-source scientific publishing platform. Quarto enables the creation of highly diverse platforms for various purposes.

We use proven practices from Open-Source communities in our version control. Open-source version control allows everyone willing to participate to actually submit their work and enhances the management of changes when multiple people make changes simultaneously.
